Problem

DevOps/SRE’s need to respond to outages as quickly as possible to avoid critical applications from going down. Each minute a application is down could potentially cost a business millions of dollars. The issue we faced is, it is difficult for our users to acknowledge alerts to detect and identify a problem remotely if they do not have their laptop with them.

Target

Andre was the persona that represents the developer that builds the service but is not a power user of Sumo Logic. Because of this Andre needs his information to troubleshoot any problems promptly.

Solution

We provided developers quick access to their team dashboards through a mobile app. This allows them to quickly identify a problem remotely and time efficiently, eliminating the need of finding available wifi and setting up your computer.

The team of designers and developers began our project by sketching the entire flow of the app from the beginning of a developers task of detecting a problem, to identifying the criticality. Our main objective was to get a user “in and out”' of the app to then troubleshoot via laptop if the issue called for it. I myself was in-charge of designing the legend panel of the app. The legend allows a users to select which color coded metric they want to isolate along with query information once singled out. Some of the bigger design challenges was providing enough information in a limited amount of space. The other challenge was giving the user the ability to quickly isolate the metrics that were important to them. Our team worked quickly to finish the project and put together a final presentation in just 5 days.

Final Outcome

Results were exceedingly positive, Sumo Logic Mobile is now being tested and planned for a future product release.
